Preparation Method

Step 1: Cook Pasta and Broccoli

  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
  2. Add the pasta and cook until just al dente according to package instructions.
  3. Drain and set aside, reserving ½ cup of the pasta cooking water.
  4. Steam or boil broccoli florets for 3–4 minutes until just tender. Drain and set aside.

Step 2: Prepare the Sauce

  1. In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.
  2. Add flour and whisk continuously for 1–2 minutes to form a roux.
  3. Gradually pour in the milk while whisking to avoid lumps.
  4. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer until it thickens.
  5. Stir in Dijon mustard, grated cheddar cheese (reserve some for topping), salt, black pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg if using.
  6. Adjust the consistency with reserved pasta water if needed; the sauce should be creamy but pourable.

Step 3: Combine Ingredients

  1. In a large mixing bowl or directly in the saucepan, combine cooked pasta, broccoli, drained tuna, and sauce.
  2. Stir gently to coat everything evenly.

Step 4: Assemble the Bake

  1. Preheat the oven to 190°C (375°F).
  2. Transfer the pasta mixture into an ovenproof baking dish.
  3. Sprinkle the reserved cheese evenly over the top.
  4. If using, mix breadcrumbs with a teaspoon of olive oil and sprinkle on top for a crunchy crust.

Step 5: Bake

  1. Place the baking dish in the preheated oven.
  2. Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbling.
  3. Remove from the oven and let rest for 5 minutes before serving.
